Wireless phone charger

Post by RodLaird » Mon May 25, 2020 2:11 am

Hi Guys,

Somebody posted a 3D printed organiser for the space under the center console. Thought it looked clunky and expensive! But I appreciate that it takes quite some effort to extract the dimensions from that space. I have had my phone sitting there on a wireless charger - though it did flop around a bit. So I thought perhaps of doing a better job and including a charger as well. But I regularly forgot to take my phone with me when leaving the car... Doh. So continuing to leave it out of sight was not a good design choice. And I found myself leaving my phone in the middle slot so as not to forget it - and it neatly fitted my Galaxy 10 Note+ monster in its case... So better design choice

So I popped the following design together last night:

And printed it this morning: works a treat

3D print files available on my Thingiverse page:

The wireless charger is available on Aliexpress for a few dollars. The whole thing cost me a couple of hours to design, a few more to print (and about $1 in materials) - and there it is... You might be able to just buy a base, print the files and bingo - or use the idea to do a better version for yourself with a charger base you have at hand. (You can see from the image that mine has been around a while...)

Enjoy.
cheers from Oz

In the US forum there was a comment that this was not a fast charger. Given my old charge base was pretty manky, I paid Aliexpress a handsome US$12 for a much smaller Qi fast charger. Turned around the design files for it and here it is: [Still same location in https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4394134]

Not as obtrusive with no phone sitting in it.. iPace 5V socket does not provide the 2A required for fast charging but neater...

Since some time I am using a "low tech DIY" solution to wireless charging in the I-Pace.
As I almost never use the cup holders I always had the cover on it and that is the place where I put my phone.

The idea was now to have some sort of Qi charger in that place.

So I took a cheap Qi charger from eBay ...

... and taped it under the cup holder cover.

Yes, this is not nearly as elegant as the 3D printed part suggested here.
Actually, I even opend the plastic case of the Qi charger and only taped the PCB and the charging coil itself.
So, it is more a quick proof-of-concept, but it is functioning and fully reversable.

Happy charging!

LOLZ like it! You can get "naked" Qi coils for about $3 on aliexpress that will certainly work! I need a cup holder now and then though so not a "go'er" for me I am afraid.

Have found no use for it... Would be nice if Jag voice navigation worked as well but I like the full nav screen in driver console... And music works just fine if I want to stream from Tidal via BT. I prefer lossless FLACs on USB for music though. Frustrated by USB 3.1 incompatibility. And system lags. Sigh. Jaguar software a real weak point of an otherwise lovely vehicle.
