Is it too Early ?

Post by Kendom » Tue Nov 24, 2020 9:20 am

hi

Im considering getting an IPace as a vehicle on a Caribbean island.

The pros of course would be that on a 290 square mile island, my journeys will always be short and also the Tropical climate, particularly the heat should be favorable for the battery. I would be able to charge from home exclusively as no journey would ever require me to do otherwise.

The biggest downside is dealer support. There is one accredited EV garage who is pretty good. Roads are not horrible and I have a proper SUV / Pickup for the offroad I invariably have to do. Another potential downside is the life of the vehicle but if life is anything close to 100k miles I will not do that in 20 years.

Cost wise if I want any premium vehicle it makes sense to do an EV as import duties are zero, and the cost makes it worth the while vs importing any ICE vehicle.

Is there anyone here operating an Ipace in a hot climate, like South Africa or Australia or elsewhere ?

Any other things to check for if I do take that jump ? The other option Ive looked at is prohibitively more expensive (Audi Etron though the Sportback looks nice) and the small cars just dont appeal to me. Same island I'm on has a Nissan Leaf operating fine but that thing is ugly to say the least and I am not a small car guy.

I've been driving EVs in hot Florida for a while now with no problems. I would definitely stay away from the Leaf in a hot climate as they do not have proper active cooling of the battery pack (only passive cooling).

This may seem counterintuitive, but I would look for a used I Pace in your situation. With EVs, it seems like if the vehicle is going to have an issue, it will reveal itself within the first year or two (electrical engineers use the morbid term "infant mortality rate" to describe this). Once you get past the first couple of years, EVs will generally run without issue.

Hi there

Thanks for your comments.

Ironic when I saw your vehicles. I want an Ipace as well as a Range Rover Sport :)

I agree with you on used. yes. It would be next year and I am looking at used. Saw a lovely one on autotrader for 42k ukp but its a bit early for me. I am sure more will be there.

The other one which was of interest is the Volvo XC40 electric as it is a proper SUV (albeit smaller) but that is is way overpriced. I will get a test drive of the Ipace once Covid recedes and take it from there.

Dealer support is going to be your main problem, it’s not just being a EV, specialist Jaguar support may be needed, dealers in the U.K. struggle.
IPace SE Caesium Blue, Ivory interior, Air suspension, 18in wheels, Drivers pack, 360. arrived 16th July, very nice.

Thanks.

That is my major concern. Will contact Jaguar directly. If there is a neighboring island with a Jag specialist they can let me know.
