But Musk apparently tweeted a couple of days ago that a model s is non its way to the Nürburgring. And the circuit has said there is no space / time for them to attempt a proper timed run

Tee hee! I have been vaguely following Tesla’s exploits with this. It seems (arguably) to be a prototype roadster with a model S body shoved on top - we will have to wait to see what the end result is like. Not that I want a car for track use (if I did I’d get another caterham) and this obsession with the Nürburgring is preposterous (don’t get to use that word often enough)

Yup. Cheap advertising though ... given that Tesla don't pay for any conventional advertising.

my take is that the 3-wheel (sorry ... 3-motor!) "Plaid mode" will come to Model-S at back end of next year (Tesla have said as much) and, as you say, that will then be intended to be the proving ground for doing much the same on the Roadster.

Any time I read this kind of thing I always think of Top Gear’s premise that may car that is tuned to perform well on the Nürburgring will be awful to drive on the road. It’s a stunt, and ultimately meaningless to real world driving. But car companies seem obsessed with it. Not sure who started it but they have a lot to answer for!

There is an Autocar video on YouTube as well. They really rate it very highly.
