Difference with 18” Wheels?

Post by NightFox » Tue Apr 16, 2019 7:53 pm

I’m currently playing around with spec for a potential purchase. As I’m looking at PCP, it makes most sense for me to go for the HSE, but I’d be inclined to go for 18” wheels due to what I’ve heard about improved energy efficiency and softening what can be quite a hard ride on bigger wheels. However, it would irk me to know that I was getting a cheaper wheel but still paying for the standard HSE one (I couldn’t just sell the stock ones if the car was on PCP).

So, how much of a difference in range and comfort (with air suspension) do 18” wheels really give?

Thanks,

Neil

Between 10 to 15%. Depending on 20” or 22” wheels.

However, the car looks much better with the larger wheels.

Suggest a good compromise would be 20”.

18” = Range

22” = Style

I went for 20s on my HSE, I really don't think 18s would make that much difference and they do look better with the larger wheels as Chewy says.

Have a look at the range calculator on Jaguar's website. I have to say, it seems really accurate for my car and driving, so you should be able to see exactly what difference it makes in a variety of different temperatures and also compare motorway and urban driving.

Not sure where they get a combined average for urban and motorway of less than 30mph, but at least it gives you an idea.

This is taken from the Jaguar website.

I've got 18" winter wheels and 20" summers. The ride is definitely firmer on the 20"s, but still very comfortable

I can't say I've noticed a difference in consumption. In fact I am getting better consumption on the 20"s, but that is purely because the ambient temp has warmed up considerably since I have changed from my 18" winter wheels.

I can get 230 miles / 350km on single carriageway / country roads keeping a steady 55mph. Motorways I hammer it, as it's faster to hammer it and charge, than to take it easy the whole way.

Agreed on design. I didn't want the 22"s because new tires would cost $1,500 for a full set.

I think the 20" are much more reasonable. I can't imagine the 18's would be noticeably better. And quite honestly I don't plan on driving long distance (200+ miles) regularly. :-)

One thing to consider wrt wheel size are the insurance policies that will replace your tyres and wheels if needed (not through general wear but damage).
All the ones I looked for would not cover 22in wheels. 20in was the max.
