Data use

Post by JesmondJ » Fri Jun 14, 2019 6:11 am

My car arrives next Tuesday and I am going to get a data SIM given the stories of the car’s high data usage. How much data are people using per month with all features turned on? Also, I’m looking for a good UK data SIM deal so would be interested to hear what packages peoples have gone for from the providers.
Thanks

On average about 10MB per day.

Hi

I find the included SIM is fine for most of the time, i have also taken the extra 1gig per month offer from them at £58.00 for the year... more than enough with 1.5gig.... so far this month with 2 days to go, i have used 378m of 500 I use it for everything to do with navigation but not satalight imagies, also i do no stream music to my car... So about right for me and a low cost option. I did look at other SIM packagies but was way more in the end to just throw away the included one. Hope that helps

Of course if you've got kids and enable the WiFi hotspot then all bets are off!

I've always made a point of ensuring that the SIM I have in my car is from a totally different service provider than the one I have in my phone (i.e. not just a different one that shares the same network). That way, if I've not got data coverage with either my car or phone, then there's still a chance I might with the other - and for the same reason if I need to make a call somewhere where I've got no signal on my phone, I can try putting the car SIM in it.

I bought this data sim my Ubigi lasted about 20 minutes  OK that's an exaggeration, but no more than a few days.

That looks very tempting, especially as my usage would vary massively from one month to another. The only downside with 3 is that they don't have a 2G fallback data network. With other service providers, if you don't have a 3G signal but still have a voice signal (e.g. Edge), it will still send/receive data, albeit slowly. However, with 3, no 3G/4G reception = no data. It's probably less of an issue these days with data coverage improving, but it might be worth looking at the coverage map on 3's website and considering that anywhere that shows "voice only" will mean no data at all.

I use the 3 network "Internet with Legs" sim in my soon to be replaced Evoque. I drive around Berks, Surrey and Sussex a lot and occasionally up to Norfolk. It is very rare to lose signal with it.

My 3 sim lost data all the way down the Kintyre peninsula last weekend. That didn’t help with my charging nightmare!

I gave up on using ubigi or any internal sim

The i pace is a data thief. It uses huge amounts of data when compared to my other JLR incontrol vehicles ( D5, discovery sport ). The velar was the same. It ate data for no obvious reason.

Dual sim ( EE and Three ) iPhone used as a hotspot.
haven’t lost connection yet.
Currently a Phoenix orange disco sport ( using as my builders van !!! and luggage carrier when out in motorhome )
Gone : I pace 2019 First Edition. Photon Red
Gone : velar
Gone : Disco 5
Gone : 2 x disco sports

Awaiting a phev disco sport.
