Porsche Panamera to Jaguar I-Pace

Post by thorfun » Fri Jun 14, 2019 4:57 pm

Hi all,

I've been lurking here ever since I decided to move from my Panamera 4-hybrid to an I-Pace. The Panamera is an amazing car but I decided it was time to go full EV.

After doing a lot of research and test driving the I-Pace, E-tron and Model S and then it looking like the Taycan is going to be a saloon rather than hatchback from the spy shots on the web I decided to go for the I-Pace. That was back in April.

Now, 2 months later, I'm about 2 weeks away from picking up my Corris Grey HSE.

I'm very excited about it all. :-)

Thanks to all the posters that have given information about the car, it has been invaluable and I can't wait to start driving it.

You will not regret your decision, a mate in my local has a Panamera, he has been out in the I Pace with me on 3 weekend photo shoots and guess what, he ordered an I Pace last Monday, he gets it in October.

Beautiful. Initial thoughts compared to the Panamera?

that's a good question! I hadn't actually considered comparing the two as they're very different beasts. Build quality of the Jaguar is very good and I'd say on par with the Porsche.
Despite the V6 twin turbo of the Panamera sounding amazing when driven hard I really like the silent, instant torque of the electric motors and when accelerating in the Jag it's so smooth all the way up. obvious really as there aren't any gears. I actually enjoyed driving around town in the Panamera on electric alone, it was very serene but the power was limited so it's really nice to be able to floor it on electric alone. The Panamera would go to about 85mph on electric but it was slow getting there as if you put your foot down too hard the ICE kicked in. But, despite the love of a good engine and exhaust sound I don't think I'd ever go back to ICE driving for my main car. maybe a weekend V8 should the finances ever stretch that far to relive the old times but I'm an EV-angelist now.

the ride and handling of the Porsche was better being lower to the ground and a sports car at heart (albeit a very long and heavy one!) but I'm very happy with the Jag despite it being a higher ride.

overall, I'm very happy with the Jag....but who knows what way the wind will blow once the Taycan or Mission-E cross-turismo come out. I'm not known to keep my cars for long.

Interesting write -up, thanks.

I've built up my exposure to EVs over a few years with both versions of the LEAF before the i-Pace so I haven't driven a decent ICE for a while to compare it. The closest in performance terms I remember was my CLK AMG55, although that cost a bit more to run (and was somewhat noisier).

I would also find it very hard not to be in an electrically powered car now and it looks like the tide is finally turning with regard to choice. I'm similar to you in that I've had 56 cars in 32 years but I'm very happy with the Jaguar at the moment though. I plan on keeping it long enough to be my longest ownership so far (2 years in a Boxster - very different again).

Enjoy!
