Suspension and Wheel Choice

Post by anupanu » Sat Nov 09, 2019 9:43 pm

There seems to be very polarised views of which set up is best, so please select your set up choice and comment as to your reasons if you wish. Also, having driven your set up, would you make the same choices again?

See the comment by BIlly Bunter in the "HSE must have option"-thread. Fully agree with him. air suspension is very comfortable, and I like the options it gives: off-road, lowering on parking. Air-suspension is adjusted while choosing another drive mode. No need - for me - to add 1500 Eu active air option

Air ✅ includes basic modes Comfort, Normal, Sport etc and also lowering and raising off-road settings
Active ❎ because AIR is enough for me, no need for any more fancy multiple configurations and I didn’t want Adaptive Surface Response (this would be my only reason for getting Dynamic as you can’t have Adaptive Surface without it)

20” as a compromise, and because I like the black 20” wheels

I don't think any of the wheels are steel. All are alloys in the UK.

Steel means suspension type, as opposed to air suspension. Not referring to wheels

18" wheels give a very comfortable ride and give the best range. No point in forking out for Air if you have 18" Wheels.

Almost no chance of curbing the wheels with 18" .

All comes down to personal preference of course. And budget ultimately.

I have the 18" wheels with steel springs and find the ride very comfortable and handling excellent (bearing in mind it is a 2.2 tonne crossover / SUV we're driving).

I've driven an i-Pace on 20" wheels with air suspension (briefly) and another on 20"s with steel springs (for 3 weeks) and can't honestly say I noticed a difference between the two. Both were noticeably, but not unbearably, firmer riding and seemed to have slightly sharper turn in than mine. And probably have a 5% shorter range.

But the 20"s look much better IMO. And are infinitely easier to clean!

18in wheels also make the steering slightly lighter.
Cesium Blue HSE no sunroof, air suspension, HUD. Changed 20in wheels to 18in :D .

I have 18" wheels & standard suspension & been very happy with the set up. I test drove a car with 20" wheels & air & decide that it really wasn't worth the extra cash.

I have 20" wheels on steel springs and am perfectly happy with the setup. I have just switched to winter tyres on 18" wheels so will find out over the next few weeks what difference the wheel size makes (hopefully better range to compensate for loss of range due to weather).
