SIM Card and Data Usage

Post by Dave187 » Tue Jun 30, 2020 5:08 pm

Hi all,

Just wondering what others have done in relation to SIM cards and data for their car?

I beleive the car comes with a 500mb data SIM, however just been offered a deal with Virgin media where I can get a 5gb SIM for £1 per month, wondering if it will work and whether I actually need it...

Cheers

Do think about amount of data and cost but also be mindful of coverage. You can/do drive to perhaps remote places with your car and if you want you Sat Nav to given you accurate info or traffic news, it needs coverage and there's no use in having 100gb of data allowance if you have no coverage where you are going.

For that reason, you might want to buy from one of the main operators or via their smaller subsidiary operators so that you know you have coverage. You might not get 100gb of take for a shilling, but at least you know that if you drive to somewhere remote, you have a good chance of some connectivity.

Virgin is an EE MVNO though. Its coverage is stellar, especially in remote regions, because of its 4G emergency services contract, for which it built the infrastructure rather ahead of deployment.

I just checked

June 1-30, 800 miles

240Mb used

That is just sat nav / real time traffic, not used for hotspot etc.

Thanks all that’s useful, I probably would use the hotspot for streaming and also I have two three year olds who tend to use tablets in the car on some journeys so might be worth it.

if you want to use the hotspot - you will definitely need a 2nd sim.

activate the ubigi sim, and use it every now to ensure it stays live and then buy a UK data sim as cheap as possible.

My 500mb refreshed yesterday, I’ve done 100 miles today and it’s used the lot!
Had got Spotify on and navigation all enabled.
Back to the three sim :)

I bought the new MY21 version, which comes with 4G embedded SIM (500MB per month only - so basically good only for traffic info, SOTA, etc but not for hotspot use). I have the option to pay £250 for a 1-year wifi subscription using the embedded SIM and they quote a fair usage policy. However I have a few doubts:

- how many GBs do I get with the £250 / year subscription? It does not state what the limit is and quotes some "fair usage" policy but there's no link to it. Does anyone know?
- could I just not get the wifi plan (so stick to the included 500MB for free) and simply insert my own data-only micro-SIM? (I don't know if it comes with the option for me to insert my own micro-SIM ... is it just the embedded sim that I could use?). Because this way I can get a good plan for 5GB of data or so... which would be sufficient for music etc... for less than the £250 they quote as a cost

Thank you!

You can just buy your own sim .....and probably have £200 of your £250 to spend on something else.

Only my wife and I use the car normally and with the hotspot turned off the Ubigi is enough data for us! (Don't stream music either - play directly from our phones).

EE are currently doing an 80GB SIM only for £20.00 per month. Offer ends at the end of this month - July. I have just upgraded my mobile phone SIM. Once I had ordered this package at the bottom of the page it said as another special offer you have TWICE that amount of data at no extra cost - I.E. 160Gb! Check it out on the EE web site....
