The connection is very sensitive I find, I tend to find the USB C connector is better than USB A but it is still pretty sensitive, which is why Wireless AA would work a lot better, if it ever comes.

 

Have had this issue and not sure whether it's the phone switching between portrait and landscape through the bumps. Try standing the phone up slightly or setting to portrait and see if that helps.

 

If you let the phone connect wirelessly there is no issue. It only becomes a problem if you use the cable.

 

So @electric beagle should this work on all versions of i-pace? I have 2018 model

 

2018-2020 models are different than newer models. They don't have USB-C sockets or Wireless AA.
Correct advice can't be guaranteed without knowing the model year of the car.

Given the OP mentions movement of the devices, it suggests a cable connection issue. Different cables have been tried. This suggests the device ports are showing wear on the specified Android devices that an unspecified Apple device doesn't have.

There are wireless adapters available that plug into the car and the phone wirelessly connects to the adapter. This might be an alternative solution over replacing the ports in the Android devices.

 

I don't think it is a phone port wear issue at all, the car is unusually sensitive to small movements in the cable. Whilst the early cars don't have the option of a usb c connection (which I find is a bit more reliable than the USB A in my car) or wireless, the next thing the OP could do would be to ensure the phone is immobile (using the under centre rest clip to secure it perhaps or the slot between the cupholders). The car is unusually sensitive to tiny cable movements even on brand new phones (and I have had 4 android phones in the time I have owned the car).

This is unique to this car and has not impacted other cars I have driven and connected my phone for AA (apart from some JLR loaners which seems equally bad, one of which would not connect at all).

I am not an Apple fan so have never tried an apple phone or iPod but perhaps if they use a lightning connector that is somehow more stable for the car?
